The Mozambican National Under-17 Football Team qualified for the World Cup for the first time in its history, after defeating Ethiopia 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time, in a play-off match for access to the World Cup, played in Morocco.
The Ethiopians started the match stronger and scored in the 16th minute through Amir, putting pressure on the Mozambican team. The 1-0 score remained until halftime.
In the second half, the Mambinhas returned with a different attitude and took on a more offensive role. The response came in the 56th minute when Diogo Pelembe scored the equalizer, restoring hope to the national team.
With the score remaining tied until the end of regulation time, the match went to penalties.
In the penalty shootout, Mozambique proved more competent and won 5-4, with Sharif converting the decisive shot that sealed their historic qualification.
With this victory, the Mambinhas (Mozambique’s youth team) secured their first-ever appearance at the Under-17 World Cup, which will take place in Qatar.
