CAN 2027 QUALIFIERS: MAMBAS DEFEATED SUDAN (4-1)

The national football team, the “Mambas,” defeated Sudan 4-1 today at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo during a Matchday 2 fixture in Group J of the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).

Witi Quembo scored the opening goal in the 24th minute. In the second half, Chamito extended the lead in the 46th minute.

Ricardo Guimarães (“Guima”) scored the Mambas’ third goal in the 58th minute. Chamito found the net again in the 62nd minute, scoring the Mozambican team’s fourth goal and his second of the match.

Sudan narrowed the deficit in the 84th minute via a penalty kick converted by Mohammed, setting the final score at 4-1 in favor of Mozambique.

Speaking to the press, national team coach Chiquinho Conde described the victory over Sudan as an important result for the Mambas, especially following their draw against Senegal.

Conde acknowledged the difficulties faced in the first half due to the opponent’s defensive approach but highlighted the team’s ability to break the deadlock after Witi Quembo’s goal. He also praised the performance of Chamito—who scored two goals—and the integration of the new players.

He further stated that upcoming challenges would require the same attitude and intensity, maintaining that “there are no easy or difficult opponents; they are all within our reach.”

Regarding the next match against Ethiopia, he revealed that Guima’s absence due to accumulated yellow cards would force the coaching staff to make some adjustments.

Chiquinho Conde highlighted the importance of the U-23 national team in the development and recruitment of players for the senior squad.
